(Reply: None) (Posted by: Bill W.) ----- (Starfire, Crew Quarters, C'Nell, Day 1, 0600) Having made an inspection of the inadequate science facilities aboard C'Nell began to unpack; his roommate had obviously been here but had done as he had; dumped his stuff before taking a tour. C'Nell had read the crew files on him; but he had learned that the files rarely told everything, especially after dating Jess. He lied on the top bunk and began to think of her. He wondered whether a war ship would do her much good; sometimes he felt they both needed to get away from combat, Signos would never change department though. The possibilities flooded his mind. (Reply S'yes) (Posted by Nathan) ----- (Starbase 989, Quarters, Corey, Day 1, 0707) Wane was up early, the last night he would spend on the Starbase, after the breakfast, he ran over balcony levels, all around for half an hour, and decided to skip the weight lifts for today. It was to be his first day on his new ship, the USS Starfire. He met the Captain yesterday, and decided he might have made a good call this time. When he got back to his quarters, he called in an old friend. "Gorgot." "Wane. You still owe me a cloaking device." "Owe ya nothing, that was a fair bet. And you lost it, buddy." Wane grinned, opening a bottle of Jack Daniels he got over the scanners on board the station by a Ferengi friend, then changed his shirt. "I see your taste in contraband drinks didn't change." he chuckled. "And what did change on Nausicaa?" he asked, taking a sip from the simple glass. "Nothing much. The rich are still getting richer. The rest of us... well you know how it goes yourself, Wane. Tell me, this wasn't a social call, was it?" Gorgot frowned. "No. I need your help." The Nausicaan sighed. He has obviously been expecting this. "I'm listening." "The last mission got botched, some damn cargo ship leaving us to feed the fishes. We detected some weird readings, but our scanners couldn't push through it's plating." "And you want me to track down the ship?" "You've got connections to other clans and with traders. The ship was named Lumiya. No doubt a fake name, but they might have been careless enough to use it more then once. I'm sending you the data, screens and stuff we managed to capture." "Can't say I ever saw anything like that thing. I'll ask around, no promises." "Not looking for any. But if you find something..." "You'll be the first to know, Wane. How is that bird of yours holding up? Somehow the background behind you doesn't look very... Klingon to me." Gorgot smiled, it was a sight to behold. "The Romulan has it now, I paid my dept, overpaid." "The boy has it? Hahaha, I see I'll be able to pick it up from some junkyard for cheap very soon." "He ain't that bad." he poured himself some more of the drink. "So I have been told. I guess it's the old habits of not trusting the pointy ears." "He went on the revenge. The Captain would be proud." "Who would have thought, a Romulan, with a Klingon heart? I think I might be crying." Gorgot bursted into laughs. Wane was silent. When Gorgot stopped laughing, he got serious again, continuing the talk. "Tell me, Wane, are you going back Federation permanently this time?" "I don't know. I was asked to serve on the new ship, Defiant class, Chief Engineer. Don't know for how long." "Oooh, sounds fancy, and a Defiant class, just like old times, eh. You better not tell me anything secret, I don't think the Blues would understand you talking with someone with as... colorful criminal record such as the head of the Wolf Clan." "So you finally managed to get to it? Congratulations, now you can make a damn difference." "Nonsense. In the last pothole, where you wouldn't look even for a cockroach, you can find bureaucracy and politicians." "Sounds to me like you need pest control." Wane laughed out loud. "Everyone feels entitled to proclaim themselves the one to reunite the clans, but have no claws to back it up." "Times change, my friend." "And they aren't going for the better." "They will, you aren't fighting anyone on any front, except between yourselves for the supremacy." "That's just it. The men are restless. They want to fight, they need it. But it has been peace for far too long. Even the Klingons lost their edge, they feel more like domesticated targs then warriors." "Careful, Gorgot, you don't want anyone from the high council hearing that, lest you might find the whole might of the Klingon Empire at your back." he grinned. "Bah, bunch of unorganized wussies, biting and bickering between themselves. I'd welcome a good fight with a real Klingon." In the background, a clear sound of disruptor rifle shooting broke through the silence, "Looks to me you've got enough problems even without me there." "You're always welcome in our clan, Wane, you know it. You are one of us. If you feel your place is now on a Federation vessel, then we will have to understand." "It's a Defiant class, it's a warship, I doubt it's going to be caught in those long scanning and charting missions." "I see the appeal. I am sad our ships were never as powerful as the ship you got used to." "Nothing to do with that, I would prefer a non-Starfleet ship if I could choose. Everything is so damn clinically clean around here." "It seems to me you spend too much time with us animals, haha." Gorgot laughed so fierceful that he thrown all the little PADDS he had laying on his table to the sides with his hands. "I miss the old team." "Bah, you miss the women, admit it." Wane checked the time on his computer. "Seems I need to go. We will be hearing each other again." "If I find something more about that ship, I'll let you know." Wane closed down the channel. It was time to hit the sonic showers. (Reply none) (Posted by Lani) ----- (Starfire, Andersen, Day 1, 0733) What a shame, the Defiant class had bunk beds. Andersen had to say goodbye to the cozy and spacious personal quarters from the Rosenante, at least for now. This was spartan, compared to the Rose. There weren't even a window. On the other hand, it was definitely far less space for cleaning up, so Ailyn thought that was a positive thing. ~Atleast something~ she thought laughing a little. And as it usually goes, the small room wasn't completely hers either. Luckily, she shared it with another of a kind - nurse Tesha. Certainly it made all the sense in the world if they had an medical emergency, they'd be ready faster, but on the other hand, she had no idea of Andorian customs. She didn't really know Tesha that good so far. Somehow, she always wanted to call her for a coffee but never really managed to. Yet, it also made her feel safer being in the same room with her. "You know" she started "if the bed's as hard as it looks, I might just sleep in the medbay." looking at Tesha and pulling her stuff out of her bag with her left hand. So much things to put so little space. (Reply Tesha) (Posted by Lani) ----- (Starfire, Quarters, Tesha, Day 1, 0735) When Tesha learned that the repairs to the Rose were going to take so much time that the ship would be out of service for a few months, and that the crew was going to be reassigned, Tesha became concerned about where she would be going next. She liked being on the Rose, and she was comfortable with the people with whom she worked. Reassignments were part of serving in Starfleet, but that didn't mean she liked it. While on SB 989, Tesha had received good news. While on the Rose, she served as a medical technician. Desiring to move upwards, she had been studying to become a nurse. Before knowing where she would be serving next, she had been told that she had passed all her tests, received her certification, and had been promoted to chief petty officer. She was thrilled, but the news about the Rose had dimmed that a bit. Tesha resolved to take in stride whatever would be happening next. When Tesha finally heard where she would be going for her next duty station, she was relieved. She was going to the new Defiant class ship that was in space dock, the Starfire, and would still be under Captain Sanok and Dr. Andersen. She liked them both, so the familiarity would make the transition easier for her. When the day to board had arrived, Tesha had gone early and found her quarters. She had done some research on a Defiant, so she had an idea what to expect, though seeing things firsthand, were quite different from viewing the ship on a computer screen. Still, as an enlisted person, she had grown accustomed to sharing quarters and having less comforts, so the tiny room was just fine. She didn't know who her roommate would be, but she expected another enlisted person. She was surprised when Doc Andersen walked in. "You know, if the bed's as hard as it looks, I might just sleep in the medbay," said Andersen. She began unpacking. Tesha chuckled. Officers! "Do you want me to take the top bunk?" said Tesha. She really didn't mind which one was hers, but she figured she'd let the boss choose. In any case, this new chapter in her life was starting off in a good way. (reply Andersen) (posted by Bob B.) ----- (Starfire, Quarters, Andersen, Day 1, 0738) "Do you want me to take the top bunk?" Tesha asked, and Andersen smiled ~Like it really mattered.~ the thought crossed her mind. "Yeah, sure." she smiled back to Tesha. Bunkbeds reminded her of the Academy, and how she could never study because her bunkmate was always talking with someone through the intercom, even during light-off hours. So, in her case, if she couldn't study, she just... wouldn't study. Seems so obvious at first. She couldn't even remember how she managed to pass it all with the amount of studying she was putting in. No point in complaining about the lack of comfort on this ship, on the other hand, she just had an excuse to work as late as she could in medbay, and then just come and crash. Dead tired, she was sure she wouldn't mind a bunk. The intercom started beeping, and Ailyn jumped to press it before Tesha could. "I'm waiting for a call, please excuse me." she excused herself from Tesha. On the other side was one of the General's man. Tesha was still in the room. Undoubtedly, the person on the other side could spot this. "Ailyn, I am sorry to be bothering but, we need to talk about our relationship." the man smiled. "Uh, wait what kind of..." "I know you keep on putting me on a distance, but I really need to talk to you privately." the man smiled again, it was obvious he wanted her friend out. She turned around to Tesha, "I'll... just go to the cartography and map room, I have to answer that one." she said, hoping Tesha would understand. She ran out of their room, without closing the doors. It was rude of her to end their conversation this way, but that was a small price to pay considering the alternatives. (posted by Lani) ----- (Starfire, Corridors, Corey, Day 1, 0739) He was in his early morning walkabout, better then a nerve tonic in the morning, when he spotted a woman running away from one of the crew quarters room, as he could stop by the uniform colors, the short woman was a medical officer. The ship was still docked and there were injuries already? He laughed out loud a little, no doubt some fresh gecko from the Academy learning his or her ropes. The doors to the room were still open, and as he was standing close to them, they stood open. Knowing Defiant class ships, he knew the short medical officer cannot be alone in her quarters. He peaked inside a little bit, to see a pretty Andorian working her way unpacking things and still settling in. Disregarding the fact it wasn't really his quarters, he let himself in. "You know, I always thought the quarters from a fierce Andorian warrior lady would be filled with weapons." he said looking at the Andorian in front of him, her antennae obviously jittering by the surprise, and no doubt invasion to her space, something that Andorians hold dearly. Before she could respond anything, or even start to scream, he pulled his hand in front of her, ready for a handshake. "I'm Wane, the new Engineering Officer, and are you for a drink?" he asked, expecting to hear her name in return, and a handshake which he would, as usually, understand as Yes to his last questions. (Reply: Tesha) (Posted by: Lani) ----- (Starfire, Quarters, Tesha, Day 1, 0740) "Do you want me to take the top bunk?" said Tesha. "Yeah, sure," said Andersen with a smile. Tesha wasn't sure, but it seemed Doc Andersen wasn't happy about the small quarters. If that was the case, she could understand. On the Rose, there was comfort and lots of room. It would be an adjustment for all of them, especially for a department head needing to room with a non-comm. The communications system beeped, which startled Andersen. "I'm waiting for a call. Please excuse me," said Andersen. She moved to the small table that held the computer. A man appeared on the screen. "Ailyn, I am sorry to be bothering but, we need to talk about our relationship." Tesha turned away from looking at the screen and resumed unpacking. She didn't want to intrude on Andersen's business, but there was something about the man's look and what he had just said, that sounded odd. Without making it obvious, Tesha continued to listen. "Uh, wait," said Andersen. "What kind of..." "I know you keep on putting me on a distance, but I really need to talk to you privately." "I'll... just go to the science lab," said Andersen. "I have to answer that one." Andersen's voice changed directions, indicating that she had turned to face Tesha. She looked back at the doc, but Andersen made a quick exit before Tesha could say anything. Strange. In the time they had known each other, less than a year, Tesha and Doc Andersen had talked a lot during their time working together. At no point had the doc ever mentioned that she was in some kind of relationship with anyone. Of course, Andersen was free to keep private anything she wanted, but there hadn't ever been any indication at all that there was a person in her life beyond who she knew on the Rose. Ah, well. Maybe it was a family issue. Tesha shrugged and finished putting things in the small closet in the room. "You know, I always thought the quarters from a fierce Andorian warrior lady would be filled with weapons." The new arrival that had just appeared at her door, was a large Human male. He hadn't startled her, but Tesha hadn't sensed him coming either, which irritated her. She had allowed herself to be too preoccupied with Andersen and her mystery call. "I'm Wane, the new Engineering Officer, and are you for a drink?" The man had offered his hand, but Tesha was more concerned with the invitation to drink something with him. Her antennae twitched slightly. Often, Andorians felt uncomfortable when invited to pursue purely recreational activities or pastimes. Their curt refusals often made them seem prudish or unsociable, while in fact, they simply didn't have a strong cultural pragmatism for engaging in such activities. The harsh history of early Andorian civilization, left a strong taboo against the appearance of frivolity or wasted effort. On the other hand, Tesha was part of the new crew on a small ship. There were going to be a little over 50 people on board, and the importance of trusting each other was more important than what it was on the Rose. Most people on board were social, and with no holodeck or recreational facilities, socializing would be even more important. Still, Tesha was who she was, and if she were to change, it would come over time and not be now. "I'm Chief Petty Officer T'ishi'ah sh'Solom'aa. I'm the head nurse." Tesha laughed inwardly. Outwardly, her antennae bobbed. She had spoken her name in her full native language, something Mister Wane would have difficulty saying. Andorian humor was different from most other races, and most didn't get it. "I'm busy right now getting settled, and we still need to get sickbay ready for launch. Perhaps another time?" Tesha was being polite, a necessary thing. (reply Corey) (posted by Bob B.) ----- (Starfire, Science Lab, Andersen, Day 1, 0742) She reopened the channel on the console. "Is this a secure connection?" the man on the other side asked. "No, but I'm running a direct connection to the video feed inside the crystal General gave me. If someone is really monitoring the channel, the only thing they'll see is me talking with my mother. Why have you contacted me? I thought I was clear I am not working for the General, I am a member of the United Federation of Planets, a Starfleet officer, this is my family and my future, I want to part in the devious plans of the General. I really thought I made myself clear." "General said you were a failure. I have no idea why he just left you be without neutralizing you, consider yourself extremely lucky, he haven't shown that much affection to anyone else." "Have you just contacted me for the empty threats and to belittle me? Come now, that's even too low for you." "No, I haven't. Truthfully, I don't care what happens to you. However, a friend of mine asked me to deliver a message should she... ever meet her fate, or similar." "I am not following?" "Taylor. She asked me to deliver a message to you in case something happened to her." "What? Something happened to Taylor?" "She's gone missing. A full week without any word. General dispatched a strike team to find her, free her and... in case she leaked some information, neutralize her. Problem is, they couldn't find her." "I... I want to go too, I want to find her." "So eager to work for General again?" "No. I'd do it for her, she's... a great friend of mine." "What will we do for our... friends, eh, Ailyn? You can't go now though, after the failed strike team reported back, General went furious and took on himself and his new Second, to go after her, they left yesterday. You can't go after them, he would kill you on sight... and besides, I have no clue where they went." "Draga... can you please... find out the information somehow? I know I am not in the position to make any requests..." "Damn right you aren't. But Taylor is my friend as well. I can't leave. Ever. I would be shot on sight, so yes, I'll try to find any information of her supposed whereabouts and let you know, in the worst case scenario, I'll find it out from the General himself, if he gets back without her. I doubt he could find what his team of best trackers couldn't in a full week's time." "Thank you. Could you tell me..." The man on the other side closed down the channel. Ailyn sighed, the things just couldn't go right for her. (Reply: None) (Posted by: Lani) ----- (Starfire, Corey, Day 1, 0743) He asked the Andorian woman he just met for a drink, but his game was getting a little bit rusty. He spent so long on the freelancer ships, he forgot how polite Starfleet women often are, but he was still a little in the need for socialization. And a drink. In fact, he couldn't quite say which one he needed more. "I'm Chief Petty Officer T'ishi'ah sh'Solom'aa. I'm the head nurse." The Andorian said while her antennae made a twist. Perhaps she was expecting Wane not to be able to pronounce it as Andorian names often are - hard to pronounce for humans, however, he was able, he had a basic knowledge of Andorian. He grinned back, but said nothing. Usually, it's the expectations of people that make them create a picture of someone, and paint it, and he, right now, just wanted to be a mystery stranger. "I'm busy right now getting settled, and we still need to get sickbay ready for launch. Perhaps another time?" He was still smiling quite openly, although he wasn't offering his hand for a shake anymore. "It is a lovely name. Do you need any help around here?" he showed his perfect smile, a second time he offered a handshake, this time just not literally. (Reply: Tesha iyw) (Posted by Lani) ----- (Starfire, Quarters, Tesha, Day 1, 0744) "It is a lovely name," said Corey. "Do you need any help around here?" When Tesha was on Earth for her Starfleet training, it was a huge and overwhelming experience. It had been the first time she had visited another world, and she was meeting and interacting with many new races and people. One of the things that had surprised her the most, was how forward young males were towards young females about their desires for fun in the bedroom. Andorian mating customs were different from most humanoid species, with four sexes bonded together at birth. It was almost unheard of for an Andorian to participate in such activities outside their own species. On Earth, Tesha had originally thought the young men that approached her were just being friendly and socialiable. It was only after several of her female friends educated her on what the young men actually wanted, that she realized the truth. Having been bonded herself, though no child had been produced yet, Tesha had to learn to politely say no. Seeing Mister Corey, his demeanor, and his broad smile, it was clear what he had in mind. When the chief engineer asked if Tesha needed help getting her quarters ready, she made it a point to exaggerate picking up her shapla and taking time to look at it. The locket had a strand of her hair inside it, as well as strands from each of her three bond mates. It was the Human equivalent of an engagement ring. "No thank you, sir. I'll be fine," said Tesha. She set her shapla on her pillow. She hoped Corey would understand. (reply Corey iyw) (posted by Bob B.) ----- (Starfire, Science Lab, Andersen, Day 1, 0746) The man on the other side closed down the channel. Ailyn sighed, the things just couldn't go right for her. Not only that, but he didn't even tell her what she was trying to ask him... what was the actual message?! Forgotten by chance or deliberately, it made little difference. She didn't know the whole story here, and her hands were tied for now, since when she said she's done with the Mj12, a bounty was set on her head. Irony was, it didn't seem to originate from the General, in fact, the last message with Taylor clearly proven that General tried to lift it. The reasons escaped her, she dared not even trouble her mind about it. She knew if she goes now, while the trail to Taylor is still fresh, and she wouldn't be the only one looking for her, that she might become a bounty of a bounty hunter. Just likewise, the waiting was killing her. What if something horrible did happen to Taylor? What if she... somehow... is lying down in the pool of her own blood, whispering her name and she's here on the new ship doing nothing? No, no, no. She was not to think so negatively. Taylor was a resourceful woman. And oh so pretty woman. She could just remember that smooth feeling of her thighs, her lovely scent of her hair and that silky soft neck... Why was she thinking about that, now? It made little sense, she never thought about it before. Okay, that was a lie she told herself. She has, and she just admitted it. It was... complicated. ~See, it wasn't so hard.~ Why did it matter? Thinking about someone is just a normal thing, shouldn't it be? But she was not in love. No way. She just couldn't be. Obviously. ~Yeah, Andy, don't be silly. It's not love, you just like her as a person, that's all.~ It made all the sense in the world. Well not really. Why was she contemplating risking her life and all her career for someone she just... liked? ~Because that's what... good people do.~ she told herself. But wait, doesn't it mean that then Andy is... a good person? Oh dear oh dear, that complicated things further. Her head was hurting of such thoughts, specially those she slept over countless times. Nothing of it made sense. Not even one bit. And she just bit her lip thinking about it. ~I owe her one, she saved my life.~ Okay, 1-0 for Andy versus Logic. Now it really made sense. Really. Honestly. She found herself thinking hard to find one more reason... to explain what she thought she haven't felt. But it just wasn't going. She blew the air from her lungs so fierce, that she surprised herself she was able to. She was annoyed. Annoyed for the fact she couldn't make up her mind. Annoyed at herself, and how easily was she annoyed by herself. She really needed to concentrate on the things at hand. She just couldn't waste time thinking about... about feelings that didn't even exist. She was sure of it, besides she needed a clear mind. She looked around herself, checking the doors behind her once again, and started uploading something on the console. When she was done, she picked her tricorder back and thought about where was she supposed to go next. She needed a plan in case... in case she needed to leave, soon, and unnoticable. And she had just the right way in her mind. Of course, it was something else Taylor taught her... She wondered who it was gonna be but for now she was happy to move in. She took the bottom bunk placing a heavy duffle on the small bed. Ops had already moved her gear from her quaters on the Rose to the Starfire. She stared to unpack her gear. She placed some of her favorite outfits in the small closet offered. The rest were stored in foot lockers that she slid under her bunk. She carefully placed her Lun'ette. She was impressed by how much it had grown since it was given to her. It was only a sappling at the time but now it much more and Jessica smiled at it letting her memories was over her it was a ray of light in a dark time. That plant along with her arm blades were her most prized possessions, she opened the box that consealed her blades. These she would never use in battle the metal was forged from the carbon gained from the remains of her dead parents. It was all she had left of them. It was given to her by S31 when she completed her training, as to say 'Now you can have your parents back.' She smiled has she used a set of magnetic mounts that would hold the weapons on the wall. She smiled with everystep feeling more at home the small area was not an issue to her. She being of small statue herself. She sat on her bed and fell into thought. (Reply Room mate, iyw) (Posted by Matthew Locke) ----- (Starfire, Signos, Day 1, 0857) It was still early but there was still much that needed to get done before the rest of the crew started to arrive. Jessica had decided to get an early start the night before and had planned accordingly. She had spent close to the last hour getting moved into her new quarters, she still had no ideal who her roommate was, or when she was to arrive. But that was a diffrent matter. Right now Jessica found herself on deck four, the defiant had weapon station located all over the ship for ease of access and quick arming of the non security personel of the crew if and when the need came. She stood before one of those armories now. Checking the phasers, phase rifles that were found with in. She was also checking to make sure there was an supply of power cells for the weapons located with in the armory. She took note that while the proper amount of each item was inventoried, there was still space with in the locker for a few more power cells. In a ship where space was a premium this ment she could increase the effective fire power of each person on the ship. She would take this up with ops and see about filling each weapon station with additional power cells. Meaning less would have to be stored else where. Once satisfied that everything was in order, and the discrepancies noted she moved on to the next station, humming a small tune to herself. Has Jessica made her rounds from weapon station to weapon station she made notes about the ship. Where the mess hall was, along with the security office and the restrooms and washrooms. She took note on the most effective way of getting to each, and how to best defend the interior of the small Starfire incase they were ever boarded. It was something best done in the quite of a nearly empty ship. (Reply none) (Posted by Matthew Locke) ----- (SB989, Titanic Docking Hatch, Zyahn, Day 1, 0922) She anticipated this moment for the last few hours, yet no scenario was any close to what she was feeling. She had recalled any past experiences, and past hosts. If memories and images stay for several lifespan, the emotions fade away. There weren't much feeling tied to them anymore, only the memory of what has been felt. She said her last farewell. Her two feet had crossed the docking hatch linking the starbase with the ship. That was it...the last time she would be on the USS Titanic. Inside her she felt like a giant claw was grabbing her heart tightly. From within, she was suffocating. She was being crush by something invisible. Her eyes were fixed at the ship. She couldn't look away. She was kind of afraid if she did, or if she blinked, it would disappear. She was leaving too much behind. This ship, this crew...meant too much to her. ~What have I done? I should never......I should have never.......left... What a......terrible mistake.~ she thought. All that she wanted was to return...to say to the crew she changed her mind....that she couldn't leave them. She wanted to return and get rid of all that pain... all that terrible weight....the claw inside her.... she felt so sick, so bad...if she returned, all that would be gone. Her eyes was still fixed on the ship...the image of the crew still present in her mind. She couldn't. She knew she couldn't return. Her decision had been taken and given. She was awaited on the USS Starfire. She closed her eyes, removing the tears from her eyes. The face of each crew members were still present in her mind. She could remember every one of them. ~It is time Ayehla~ she started thinking. ~Farewell my friends.~ She turned over and opened her eyes, still wet. She walked on a steady pace. For each step she made, she felt the crew calling her, and the claw pressing harder. She felt she was leaving something important behind. But she didn't slow down, nor look back. She walked...walked....walked without thinking...all her energy and will channelled to her heart and mind... until she realized the USS Titanic was now far behind. It was gone.....and a new chapter of her life was opening. This chapter appeared right in front of her. That little wolverine, her new home. (Reply none) (Posted by Nick) ----- (Starfire, FO Quarters, Zyahn & Signos, Day 1, 1030) 36 hours was barely enough time for Ayehla to keep it up. Anew ship and a new crew meant a lot of work. Usually, the CO and FO are told several months ahead to give them time to prepare. This time, the admiralty decided they needed the Starfire on the front as soon as possible, to Ayehla's disappointment. Last minute transfer or assignment such as Ensign Chythar Skyfire had been confirmed at the last minute and she still needed to make sure the ensign will arrive before departure. Hewasn't the only one told he was assigned to the USS Starfire only 24 hours before the ship was supposed to leave spacedock. Both her and S'yes had been made responsible for making sure they would be there on time, and welcome them aboard. Also, with three responsibilities, First Officer, Security Chief and Chief Tactical, not only her responsibilities were tripled, but she also had to work on a way to make each department work efficiently. It was already clear she would have to rely a lot on the Assistant Chief. For that reason, she had asked Ensign Signos to meet her at 1030. > She was in the process of getting to know the Starfire, when the message came in that the XO wanted to meet with her. Jessica wasted little to no time to make her way to the XO's office. She pressed the door chime and waited to allowed entry into the office. > "Come in" said Ayehla. The ensign entered her quarters. She examined the ensign, trying to figure out who she had in front of her. Her very small stature was the first thing she realized. It was one thing seeing 5 feet on a computer screen, it was another thing seeing it for herself. At 5'8', Ayehla had always find herself too small. When a marine, size was the first mark of strength. A 7 foot Klingon was, just by his size, much stronger in combat than a 6 feet human, who were also stronger than she was. Early on, she learned to rely on agility and speed rather than strength and specialize in intelligence/reconnaissance rather than strike forces. It was strange to think she was much taller than Signos. Certainly, her size has been an issue all her life. She may had the kind of training Ayehla had... training could often not replace size. Reading her background, she wondered if Signos was not very alike the kind of person she was before being joined. "Please, sit. It will take more than a few minutes." > She sat, instead of announcing her entry she watched sizing up the new XO, she was taller than Jessica but then everyone was. But Jessica was more focused on her tales. How she looked at her, how she held herself. She seemed confidant, but a bit lost, maybe overwhelmed. The first officer kept her balance and moved with a sense of purpose. Jessica can tell she was trained and knew how to fight. > "I would first like to address the Tactical department. With a crew of half an hundred, most Defiant-class ships do not have a first officer. Captain Sanok has decided to have one, since the Starfire will have more diverse types of missions than a Defiant would have normally. With no FO seat on the bridge, and limited responsibilities, he decided to give me also leadership of both the security and tactical department. This will means some unusual separation of responsibilities between you and I. I will be relying a lot on you for the leadership and day to day operations of the tactical department, more than would a Chief Tactical with her assistant. In fact, you are closer to a Chief Tactical than an Assistant Chief in some aspects. However, with such a little crew, I will be overseeing decisions much easily so, I will be around often. On the bridge, I want to be able to supervise the bridge officers tasks and make sure they are coordinated. I definitely won't have time to take care of the Starfire shield, or firing. Those responsibilities will be yours. What I will still take care is the strategical part, as well as the intel part. That is why I will keep assuming the tactical scans and targeting, tactical maneuvers..." > Jessica was taken back, she knew that she was moving to the Starfire but her position on the new craft was not mentioned. Jessica had figured that she would still be assigned has the tactical chief. "I see..." She answered after a moments silence. She still felt slightly insulted she had more tactical and security experience than most her training was par to no one. Ayehla and Signos continued talking about the separation of responsibilities within the tactical department. She then switched to a more friendly subject. > "Now we can talk a bit less about business. I am curious. If you don't know anything about me, I served most of my life as a marine and later as a security officer. At 5'8", I had always find it difficult. You 8 inches small than I am. This must have been even more difficult for you. How did you manage to succeed?" Ayehla asked. > She sighed deeply thinking on how to answer the question. It seemed Ayehla did not know of her past. "I succeed because I have no choice but to." She glanced at Ayehla. "What do you know of my past?" > The way Jessica asked the question, Ayehla felt there was something more than just the usual 'troubled past' some officers had. "Honestly, only what was included in your public officer profile. I have been assigned to the Starfire only yesterday. Is there something I should know? Since I will certainly be told by captain Sanok, if it is something which could affect your duty, it would be best we discuss it now. Unless you told no one." > Jessica closed her eyes pondering for a moment how to continue. "Yes, there is great deal you need to know. My file is..." She paused for a brief moment. "A colorful work of fiction. But I can't tell you to do such would be breaking the little faith the Captain places with in. Get his approval and I will tell you my secrets" > The word 'secret' made her think of her previous captain and his secret of having eaten the last piece of pie. But somehow, Ayehla didn't think Signos' secret would be similar. "I see. Well I will ask him then. Is there still for you to go around that and still answer my question. Do you have any specific training, martial arts...?" she asked. > "Yes, several in fact including weapon training and numerada, but I can't go further into it till the captain approves the finer details." Signos replied. > ~She got me puzzled now. What could it be that is taking such a huge part of her life and skills. Maquis?... No, it must be something even bigger...~ "Yeah, you are probably right. I will wait then. Can you tell me about the way you work... a bit about your personality...or is it also secret?" she joked. > Now there was a pointed question, it was the biggest of secrets the one that above all else must be kept the fact that her body contained two diffrent personalities. Jessica's and the Section 31 assassin Lily. "Indeed my personality is confidential but I will tell you what can be told." She took a deep breath. "I lost my parents when I was younger and I never had many friends. I protect the crew of the ship because they are the closet thing I have to a family. Other than that I sing, dance, and enjoy gardening. My pride enjoy is the Lun'ette plant I keep. It is one of few gifts that I have ever been given. > "Very interesting. But, that's not exactly what I meant. I wanted to know if you are the kind of person who like to do stuff on her own, or who prefer to be surrounded with other people to help you. Are you outgoing or secretive. Are you perfectionist or you prefer a job that is done quickly. I want to know how you work" she explained. Ayehla had always find that knowing the kind of person she was working with helped. People were different. Finding and using to the best everyone's strengths were the best way to get the most out of a team. > "I tend to analyze any given situation, I am use to working in a group, but I prefer to work alone. It gives me more freedom. In the end when it comes down to the grind I am willing to do what is done even when its not nessessary the pretty thing. I guess I've been alone so long it is harder for me to work in a group." > Ayehla nodded to show she was listening. "Okay. I am currently very fine with that. On a Defiant-class, a lot will rely on you as we have a very small crew. You may be more in your element." she said. "I think that complete our first meeting. We could always adjust as we go. Before you leave, I want to make sure the ship is in perfect condition for her first mission. I want you to run a full tactical diagnostic." > "I was in the process of such when you called. I was inspecting the tactical weapon centers around the ship. But I will get in touch with engineering to make sure a full diagnostic is made of phaser arrays, and cannons has well has the torpedo system. I will also have security officer inventory all torpedo's before we are due to leave." Jessica reply as she stood and made ready to exit the XO's quarters. > Ayehla nodded to acknowledge she was done. (Reply, none) (Posted by Nick and Matt) ----- (Starfire, Quarters, Zyahn, Day 1, 1114) Even if it has been more than 24 hours since she had officially accepted the job of first officer on the USS Starfire, she didn't had time to settle in. Two days ago, she slept on the USS Titanic, while yesterday, she slept for the first time on the USS Starfire despite most of her stuffs were still on the USS Titanic. Her belongings were still in their transport boxes waiting to be unpacked. So far, she didn't had time to unpack them....having too many things to do. But at last, she calculated she could spare the next 30 minutes to start unpacking. If her quarters were unbelievably large for a Defiant-class ship, they were still smaller than the senior staff quarters on a Prometheus-class. Her dining table was right face to her bed with only about three foot between to move. The fact the sleeping, dining and relaxation area were not separated made the room still look small and did not allow for proper relaxation. Psychologically, she needed to hide the bed, so that it look like a real living room or dining room. Perhaps placing curtains around the bed would allow to hide it when she wasn't sleeping. Yeah, that was a good idea. Her office was more promising. She had much more space there, and truth be told, she would be spending must of her time there...not in her quarters. However, considering how Spartan it was on the Starfire, if she was showing too much luxury in that office, that might make the other officers jealous. So she decided to limit the number of plants and decoration in the office. She still opted for a small (and very tall) aquarium to add some life to her office...the same kind of aquarium now frequent on Ready Rooms. The advantage with fishes was the fact you could have plenty, coming from different world in a very restrained space. She was interrupted when she received a communication from the admiralty. "Yes sir." she answered. =/\= Greetings Lieutenant. I come with good news. Ensign Skyfire has been given approval for transfer to the USS Starfire, as assistant chief medical officer. He has been contacted and he is on his way. It is now a formality before we can officialise his transfer. We will contact you back when he will arrive on the Starbase. Please inform Captain Sanok =/\= said the Admiral. "Thank you sir. I will." she replied. =/\= End of transmission. =/\= She looked at the time to realize the thirty minutes was already past. She needed to be back to work. (Reply none) (Posted by Nick) ----- (Starfire, S'yes, Day 1, 1203) S'yes remembered he had left something in his quarters. Instinctively, he Bardeen his fangs and extended his claws. S'yes made an effort to relax. The tall Caitian smiled which to non-Caitians resembled snarl, spoke. "My name is S'yes," he said. (Reply C'Nell) (Posted by: Bill West) ----- (Starfire, Signos, Day 1, 1204) Jessica was sitting in the brig which also served as the security office. She was going though the files of the security personnel. Seeing who had experiance and who was fresh from acadamy. She pulled away from the screen rubbing her eyes, she did not like what she saw from the screen. This was gonna take longer than expected. Only a handful of the new crew where experianced, most of which came from the Rose, Station 989, and a few of the ships docked there. But the far greater number where green and had never seen actual combat. She turned to take a bite of her lunch, a chicken and ceaser salad she picked up from the mess hall, which quite literally was just down the hall. She sallowed her food and took a drink of leamon aid that was seated next to her salad. Jessica let her mind wonder for a bit marveling at how close everything on the Starfire was. Thomas would be just around the corner and down the hall. With out the added benifit of a holodeck she knew she would have to go though the channels of getting some room in the shuttle bay for security training. She made a note of it in her PADD, and would bring it up at the next officers meeting. She turned back to the screen looking at the best way to break down the security personnel into security teams. She would have to assign the more combat experianced as team leaders so the newer officers would benifit from that experiance. She glaced at the personel file looking taking a bite of her salad. There ever twelve security officers. With such a small number of personnel she broke down the teams to three four man teams one for each shift. The team break down would allow for one person to man each of the two tactical stations one the bridge. One person to man the brig, and the final member of the team would be allowed to respond around the ship. She would have to get approval from the XO and the Captain. Before she went to the rest of the security personel and break them down into teams. Jessica finished her meal and looked over her files again, making a few notes on her PADD. S'yes was off to Engineering and a list of things to do. (No Reply) (Posted by: Bill W.) ----- (Starfire, Zyahn, Day 1, 1218) The small size of the Defiant-class ship already created its own problem. When she was a marine, she didn't needed space. All she needed was a place to sleep and a place to workout. There was almost no need for computer and absolutely no need for an office. But a FO was like a bureaucrat. There were so many administrative duties to do, she would be spending a huge part of her time in front of the computer or desk, working on those reports. So, with almost no office in the design, the senior officers would be pretty much forced to work from their quarters. If that wasn't much of a problem, heads of department needed to meet with their staff often. Someone's quarters was not the place for such meeting. Ayehla didn't wanted her quarters to become one of the most visited place on the ship. Being also the Chief of Security, she could use the Brig/Security office as her office. The only problem was, it seemed her assistant, Jessica Signos, got the same idea. She had to rethought the way and place she worked. Individual offices didn't seemed possible on the Defiant anymore. They would have all to share the same offices, it seemed. And the Brig was maybe not the best place for that. Reviewing the ship deck plans, she looked for a place where tactical and security could work. She, at last, found such place. Aft tactical. That was were the Targeting Sensor Array was located. The array took most of the room, but there was still enough place to have four computer and the tactical system were already integrated. If there was to be tactical room, that would be it. The torpedo launchers also offered a computer, so that could also serve as an office if needed. As for the security office, there was only the brig with a single computer. With Jessica using it most of the time, she had to fine another one. Somehow, she thought it would be best working from her office. But for that, certainly they needed to bring some minor modifications to the ODN network to allows the integration of the security system into her quarters. Since she was in Starfleet, she had been contacting them far less often. Even during her shore leaves, she hadn't spent much time home, especially since the joining. Her dad seemed surprised by the communication. =/\= Hello Darling. I hope everything is fine. You are not used to contact us in such short time.? =/\= her father said. You are still the Ayehla I know. Yes, with a different personality, but you don't realize how much you still act and things like you were used to. Every year, you seems closer to what you were. I don't know if it's because I'm getting used to your new personality, but I do still laugh about how much you make me think of myself sometimes. =/\= "I know it's a lie, but thank you. He heard that Caitians were curious and nervous by nature, but seeing one firsthand was a different experience. He knew he job, though. The warp core was ready, initial tests showed the new warp core had 97% usability to overhead ratio, the mixture was stable but wasn't correct to a micron, with enough time he could have slightly enriched the mixture for better power delivery and reaction across the broad specter of warp speeds. For now, he was more then satisfied. There were some minor glitches with dampeners, due to resonant frequency of the devices, he had to reroute the power to these through several unused secondary nodes to ease out and flatten the delivery. Compared to what he had to go through every time the Bird-of-Prey was damaged, this was a walk in the park. "Engineering, are we ready?" the nervous S'yes asked. "She's ready. Just go easy on the throttle so I can monitor the core power spikes and isolate them if need be." He had an joker in his sleeve, he knew by modifying the antimatter burst energy matrix he can gain additional coverage for the warp bubble, and more stability in the carrier wave, with slightly higher consumption. This could be used to modify the engines should Captain want a semi-permanent top speed boost to his craft, the components were over-specced so he was sure it was completely safe. He was satisfied with all personnel assigned to the new ship, though it was going to be a time of adjustment for him with his new FO and new chief engineer. On the Rose, as he moved through the ranks, Sanok had always continued working with the same people. Now, with a new ship and mostly a new crew, he would be with people he did not know. All were qualified, and he was certain they would do their jobs. It was the fact that things had changed so much. that made him wonder. Yes, things had changed so much. If Sanok could have his way, he would make things go back to the way they were. They would still be on the Rose, and Captain Salid would be the commanding officer. Ben would still be there, and Jackson and Matrix, too. It was a most agreeable time in Sanok's life and career. Why did it need to end, and so abruptly? In any case, Sanok was more concerned about Corey. Sanok had told the new chief engineer that Starfleet was giving him the rank of lieutenant junior grade. He did not tell Corey that Starfleet had basically told Sanok he was out of his mind for choosing the man for the Starfire. There was some risk, but Sanok knew he had made the right choice. Again, they would all need to adjust to the situation and to one another. Speaking of adjusting, Sanok would need to do that with Ensigns Signos and C'Nell, who were now seeing each other. Sanok still did not fully trust Signos, but because of the importance of insuring she did not fall back into the hands of Section 31, and to honor Salid's promise to protect Signos, Sanok had kept her as part of his crew. He supposed there were still many things the two needed to discuss. Sanok had made it a point to set aside time to talk with C'Nell once the Starfire was in space, but the new chief of science had already contacted him about a talk. Sanok assumed it would be about their duties, but there was something in C'Nell's tone that told Sanok there was more to it. He had scheduled some time, and was in fact waiting for C'Nell now. At precisely 1330 hours, the door chime rang. "Come," said Sanok. The door opened and Ensign C'Nell walked in. (reply C'Nell) (posted by Bob B.) ----- (Starfire, Ready Room, C'Nell, Day 1, 1330) "Hello Sir" he said somewhat awkwardly. He didn't know how to approach the subject, which was illogical, he should just come out with it. Instead though he laid down his readiness reports "I had a couple of ideas; outlined here to make the science duty shifts more manageable. A few of them have personal interests in certain studies or work areas so this should...." his voice trailed off as his captain raised his eyebrow. (Reply Sanok) (Posted by Nathan) ----- (Starfire, Ready Room, Sanok & C'Nell, Day 1, 1331) "Hello, sir." "Mister C'Nell." Sanok nodded. C'Nell placed a PADD on the desk. "I had a couple of ideas, outlined here, to make the science duty shifts more manageable. A few of them have personal interests in certain studies or work areas, so this should...." Sanok listened to his new chief of science, but he should have followed the chain of command and given his report to the FO. "Thank you for the report." C'Nell scheduled a meeting for more than just handing in a duty roster. "Is there anything else?" "Yes. Actually, sir, I feel I can only discuss it with another Vulcan." C'Nell was struggling to say the words. "I have had emotions, made illogical choices. Doubtless you know my upbringing on Earth?" C'Nell knew the captain would have had full access to the files on his adoption; the disaster that made his father go missing..... Sanok knew C'Nell wanted to talk about something more than the ship or his duties, but hearing what C'Nell had just said, Sanok saw that it was going to be very private and personal, and also difficult. Since Sanok had lived much of his life with his emotions, and since C'Nell was currently living with his, it was obvious why the new chief of science had come to him. "Please sit, Mister C'Nell." Normally, Vulcans preferred to stand during conversations like this, but Sanok had learned a long time ago, that sitting added a comfort to the situation that made talking about difficult things, less difficult. "I know you have guessed what I have come to ask," C'Nell said. It was obvious to him. "I want to know, has it changed you, and if so, how?" C'Nell waited for him to speak, taking the chair as he did so. There were plenty of questions and his opening gambit was just a start. Normally, Vulcans were very private about matters such as this, but Sanok and C'Nell weren't normal Vulcans. Just as Sanok had come to a point where living with his emotions had overwhelmed him, it seemed that the same was happening to the new chief of science. When it happened to Sanok, under the advice of a Vulcan counselor, he had taken a medical leave, returning to Vulcan to begin studying Kohlinar. Others helped him, so it was easy for him to open himself in order to help another. "When I was younger," said Sanok, "I felt it was illogical to work so hard to purge something that was a natural part of me. As you know, our emotions are strong and passionate, and in me, that was so. Because of the sorrows of the civil war, because losing so many shipmates and friends was a heavy burden to bear, my emotions became so strong, they were taking me down a path that was destroying me." Sanok paused. This was something he had shared only with his counselor and with his Kohlinar teachers on Vulcan. Though he was willing to help C'Nell, it was not an easy subject to broach. "Though I have learned much," said Sanok, "and though I no longer live freely with my emotions, I still have them as a disciplined part of me. This has enabled me to have a unique perspective that most of our race cannot have. I believe it has made me stronger than what I would normally have been. Perhaps you should consider your own trip to Vulcan." Sanok paused to study C'Nell's reactions. "If I was to do it," said C'Nell, "I am scared my feelings for Signos would change. Yet, I am also scared that my feelings for her might pose a danger to us both. Perhaps they need changing." C'Nell sighed a little. He stood and extended his hand. "Thank you, sir. You have helped, but the choice must be mine." The science chief turned to leave. Vulcans disliked being touched, so Sanok did not shake hands; he knew C'Nell would understand. When C'Nell turned to leave, Sanok stopped him. "Mister C'Nell, there is something else I wish to discuss with you." C'Nell raised an eyebrow, but did not question the captain's curiosity; he was a good man, and could only be looking out for him. "You mentioned your relationship with Ensign Signos. Though your personal lives are your own business, there is something that I need to ask." Suddenly C'Nell felt he should retract his opinion, this was getting into a dangerous situation; deeper water. "Has Ensign Signos told you anything about her past?" "We mind melded, I know her mind and she knows mine; right at the start of our attraction, I learned what she did; it does not deter me, surely it is illogical to do anything but forgive her, I know you have differences, Captain. I wasn't in the Civil War, as galaxy spanning as it was, I was out of it; but I lived through a Starfleet education during a time of war. Would you question me? Or any of the other officers who were even more indoctrinated? We trained by the admirals you fought against, but we choose loyalty to you." Sanok sat for a moment and studied C'Nell before speaking. "Ensign, since you know the full story about who and what Ensign Signos is, and what she did, you are also aware that this entire situation was ordered as classified. You will not speak of this to anyone. You will not reveal what you know to anyone. If there are questions and concerns, you will come directly to me. This is a serious matter. Am I making myself perfectly clear to you, Ensign?" C'Nell simply nodded and for a few moments collected his thoughts, he realised that it wasn't Jessica he distrusted it was them. It was rare for Jess and him to talk about it; but when they did it was always 'them'. "Where Jess's past is concerned; there are only three people I trust to deal with it; you, her and myself." It was clear to Sanok that C'Nell did not fully grasp the gravity of what he was now a part of. When Sanok spoke again, his tone was deadly serious. "You have now placed yourself into a dangerous position," said Sanok. "You may think it is not so bad, or you may think you can handle it, but I assure you, Ensign, you do not understand the total situation, what is at stake, and just how dangerous these people really are. You are free to pursue a personal relationship, of course, but please be aware, that I will do what is necessary to protect this ship and its crew. If that means certain things are sacrificed or not permitted, then that is what I will do." Moments passed and neither man said anything, though Sanok could tell C'Nell was deep in thought. Perhaps C'Nell needed more time to think about it. "You may go now, Ensign. Be mindful of what I have said here. All of it." As C'Nell finally left the ready room, he began to think. He had tried to ignore the issue as far as he could, but he realised now he was probably on the captain's watch list. Just like back at the Institute, come to think of it, he wouldn't be surprised if Section 31 had had a hand in that. He pushed the thought from his mind, he was seeing ghosts where there were none. C'Nell simply wanted to move on; get back to work or Jessica. Of course, for the captain, Jessica was work. (reply none) (posted by Bob & Nathan) ----- (Starfire, Skyfire, Day 1, 1340) The tour of the ship fascinated Chythar, smiling in awe of just how amazing it all was. He wasn't sure exactly where he'd be working at first, and as an aside presumed the ship didn't even have a sickbay. ~That'd be stupid. Why send a doctor to a ship without a sickbay? Starfleet's smarter than that...~ The second officer's voice broke him out of his thoughts. "How does that sound?" S'yes asked . "Sounds fine to me, Sir. Lt. Corey, you say?" He asked, to make sure he heard correctly. ~So, a doc and engineer walk into a bar. The doc had the sense to duck.~ He couldn't help but wonder what the sickbay actually looked like, and was trying not to think about it. Readjusting his bag in his grip, he followed the second officer. "Oh, no. There's nothing wrong with that arrangement, sir. I'll be fine with it. I was just distracted for a moment or three. I can't wait to get my hands on that sickbay, see all the nifty toys." (Reply, S'yas) CD chuckled softly. He knew it was going to be a long day. He wasn't sure what to think of the engineer, since he didn't have time to read the dossier files of the crew before he got here. ~Oh well. Time to follow him and see what happens.~ He fell in-step beside the CO. "We need to have you check in with the First Officer and the skipper" S'yes added. S'yes tapped his comment badge and sent " Lt. Zyahn - this is S'yes. I need to have you meet our new doctor . He picked up his gear and began to head off toward the turbolift. As S'yes made a call to someone, he paused. He looked over toward S'yess once more before he left the bridge "Should I find them first, or find my room mate first? (Reply, S'yes) With that answer, he nodded again and asked "Any idea where I might find them, sir?" (Reply, S'yes) He headed toward the turbolift with a new sense of purpose, heading towards the first officer's quarters. (Reply, S'yes) (Posted by Kat S) ----- (Starfire, Bridge, S'yes, Day 1, 1344) S'yes and the doctor were in the bridge. The Caitian second officer had showed the doctor around a bit. This was to familiarize the newest crew member with his assignment. The crew compliment was now complete. He had not yet meet with his enlisted staff. His senior enlisted man was a master chief petty officer named Sheridan. Phil Sheridan was a recommendation from Lt. Cmdr Tom Jackson. Jackson had been a senior at the academy when S'yes was a freshman. Despite the differences in class standing the two became friends. S'yes trusted Jackson and his suggestion. The doctor had asked him a question. S'yes responded he'd take Skyfire to the First Officer. The trip to the First Officer was quick. S'yes introduced the new crew member to the First Officer. S'yes said" I'll leave you here Doctor. Lt. Zyahn, unless you have something else, I've got a few last minute things to cover". (Reply: Zyahn, Skyfire) (Posted by; Bill West) ----- (Starfire, FO Quarters, Zyahn, Day 1, 1347) It didn't took too long for Lieutenant S'yes to come with the new ensign. They had spoken only a few minutes ago and there they were already. "I'll leave you here Doctor. Lt. Zyahn, unless you have something else, I've got a few last minute things to cover". S'yes said. "Go ahead Lieutenant." she said. As the lieutenant left, Ayehla resumed with the ensign. "Welcome aboard ensign Skyfire. It is always a privilege to welcome such a young talent right from the academy. Congratulation on your excellent marks and performances. So, how do you feel?" (Reply Skyfire) (Posted by Nick) ----- (Starfire, FO Quarters, Skyfire, Day 1, 1348) He was dropped off by Lieutenant S'yes in the first officer's quarters. There was a brief exchange of words before Lt. S'yes left the room. "Welcome aboard, Ensign Skyfire. It is always a privilege to welcome such a young talent right from the academy. Congratulation on your excellent marks and performances. So, how do you feel?" That gave him pause. He wasn't sure how he was supposed to feel. He had a doctor, and a patient die on him during the training simulation that was supposed to be his final. Then he got brought on board the ship. He didn't know what he wanted to do. Or what he should say. He'd been silent for just a little too long. "Feel, sir? I don't know. I mean...I'm nervous, of course. I don't think that my performance during the final training simulation was adequate. I preformed, sure. I felt I didn't perform sufficiently. My instructor must have felt differently, given the circumstances." (Reply, Zyahn) "A lesser Ensign might say 'I am not fit for such a position on board your vessel.' I say, 'Bring it on.' I welcome the opportunity to be selected as part of your medical crew on this voyage, sir." (Reply, Zyahn) (Reply, Zyahn) (Posted by Kat) ----- (Starfire, FO Quarters, Zyahn, Day 1, 1349) Ensign Skyfire seemed surprised by the question. "Feel, sir? I don't know. I mean...I'm nervous, of course. I don't think that my performance during the final training simulation was adequate. I performed, sure. I felt I didn't perform sufficiently. My instructor must have felt differently, given the circumstances." he said. Ayehla smiled. That made her remember of her discussion with one of her instructor when she went for a one-year academic update when she switched from marine to security officer. Having already graduated from that same academy several years back, and being a Trill with several lifespan, that instructor and her loved to discuss about anything. Some of those discussions, she recalled, was about how much evaluating an officer skills goes for beyond the words and tests. For example, a lot of tests were actually made to trick the officers into believing they were testing skills while they were actually testing some traits of his personality. "Ensign, we are in Starfleet. It is not as much the outcome that matters as the journey. You are still young. You can't master everything so young. But there are aptitudes for learning and being a better man. Those skills, if you have them, will make you a remarkable officer in no time. But you must be up for it." she said. "So, is this assignment for you?" "A lesser Ensign might say 'I am not fit for such a position on board your vessel.' I say, 'Bring it on.' I welcome the opportunity to be selected as part of your medical crew on this voyage, sir." the ensign added. As usual, Ayehla tried to grasp the officer personality. "I'm curious to know who that lesser ensign is. But I'm no councillor so let's get back to business." she said, inviting the ensign to take a seat. "We want the USS Starfire to be the cream of the cream. A Defiant-class ship is small, but it has everything : firepower, maneuverability, speed... We expect the same from our crew. On a Galaxy-class ship, I imagine that every doctor has it specialization. Here on the Defiant, there will be only two doctors, you and Ensign Andersen, and very few assistant. A lot of medical tasks and responsibilities will fall on you. Learning to be versatile is not easy. You will have plenty of challenges, which can be rewarding, especially for a newly graduated ensign." she added. Ayehla waited for a second or two to see if the ensign would say something... Not sure what the ensign was thinking right now, she took a bet. "Starfleet Academy is not just an ordinary academy. They make the best. Someone who has graduated has knowledge in very diverse areas and subjects. The first rule of business, is to trust yourself." (Reply Skyfire) (Posted by Nick) ----- (Starfire, FO Quarters, Zyahn & Skyfire, Day 1, 1350) "Starfleet Academy is not just an ordinary academy. They make the best. Someone who has graduated has knowledge in very diverse areas and subjects. The first rule of business, is to trust yourself." Ayehla said. Chythar nodded at that, knowing all too well that the first rule was to trust and believe in oneself. His mind was racing, but he tried not to let that show through as he answered. "You are correct, of course, sir." She found the situation a bit funny. An experience that was so far away for a Trill. She has had lots of first day at the job. It made it somehow less like a huge thing. She couldn't ever recalled how she, Zonek, felt when he was first recruited by the city of Udill as a Urban Architect a few hundred years ago. ~That must be quite an experience...the feeling of being overwhelmed...stressed by something completely new.~ she thought. "Relax ensign, it's not a test. With me it's all right. I do want you to use 'sir' or 'ma'am', but you can be a bit more natural in the way you speak to me when we are in my quart...ers." As the word got out, she realized how it could have been interpreted. She will definitely had to get used to have her office within her quarters. But now that it was out, better be playing along. The words stunned him. He had a long pause in his speech, thinking to himself ~She must be crazy thinking I'd be brash enough to get that level of informality on my first day.~ and finally spoke again "I wouldn't dream of it, sir..." ~Oh....the joy of being young. You are so innocent, so naive in a way. Ready to take on the world...and change it. Ready to make you mark, and do whatever is necessary to do it, including following protocols by the book. If only they realized how one life is short, especially when you cannot have new chances like us. Instead of wasting it....enjoy it... Duty is important, but life would become far less an headache if you relax a bit.....Yet, it is true. They only have one shot at it, and death comes quickly...so you do are in a hurry. Never mind...~ she thought. "In this case.... I assume you have or will review your responsibilities and tasks on this ship with Ensign Andersen, and Lieutenant S'yes has already gave you a tour of the ship. Which leaves two subjects to discuss. First, I want to make sure you integrate well to the crew and ship. On the Starfire, we use 12 hours shifts instead of the 8 hours shifts on most ships. It means less time per day for sleeping or leisure. However, our missions are usually shorter, so shore leave happens more quickly. We have also no holodeck, no hydroponic bay, no recreation center, and we almost all have to share small quarters with at least another officer. How well do you think you will adapt to the life on a Defiant-class ship?" ~No holodeck? No rec room? No hydroponic bay....how will I survive here?~ He pondered that over for a minute or two before answering. "I will review them all with the Ensign when I get the chance. It'll be a change for sure...I'm an insomniac and workaholic anyway, so I suppose I can get by on less sleep. I haven't met my bunkmate yet either, I don't think." "From experience, working a lot could become particularly problematic for sleeping. When your mind is busy thinking about what you will do when you will get back to work in six hours, it is usually not the best condition to sleep. I do hope you are not the Sloppy Second...on Trill, it refers to the second life of a symbiot....still discovering the early joys of life, but without having learned from their first life... that make them sloppy...we imported it from Earth but I know it means something completely different on Earth... I believe humans have a quite idiomatic expression for Sloppy Second... a poorly shod shoesmaker?. Are you?" ~Oh Goddess. Sounds like she's asking me to have sex with her on the first date...~ He tried not to blush and quickly cleared his throat. "No, sir. On our planet, a sloppy second typically refers to acts of sexual intercourse...." ~What?!?!?~ Ayehla couldn't quite be sure if the ensign was joking, or if he was serious. "Are you a poorly shod shoesmaker. A doctor, that is a poor patient?" He swallowed hard and shook his head. "No, sir. I am not a shoemaker of any quality, and it might be a poor patient indeed. I was being quite serious, however...that is the correct terminology where I come from." "If you have any problem to adapt, I want to be told. There is no shame in that, and I prefer someone who seek help than someone who suffer through it and whose performance and duties are affected as a consequence. As for your bunkmate, S'yes is in charge of that responsibility." she said. "As for the other subject I wanted to address, away mission. I do have your marks and evaluation but I want your personal opinion on your own skills and performance. How skilled are you with a phaser, and in hand-to-hand combat?" ~Thank Goddess. A topic change.~ "I don't think I'll have any problems. I have a couple of books with me that should alleviate the lack of rec room and holodeck. My bunkmate is..." He paused, searching for a name in his mind. He smiled softly and snapped his fingers. "Lieutenant Corey, I believe. The engineer." At the remaining questions, he was asked about combat proficiency. "I can avoid not getting killed in hand to hand combat, and with phasers I am an exceptional marksman. I spend time on the firing range whenever I have free time." Ayehla took some mental notes. "Lieutenant Corey, I see. You should get along well." she said without actually knowing if it was true. She had not met Corey yet, so she had very little knowledge, except Starfleet reports, of the man. "And what are your part-time area of expertise aside from medicine? Archeology, xenology, diplomat, counselor? Anything worth mentioning could be useful when I or Captain Sanok chose the away team. On a Defiant-class, we cannot have people specialize in everything...so really, anything worth mentioning..." Chythar shook his head. "Medical officer full time, 13th century Earth archaeology. Some tendencies towards xenology, specialization in xenobiological medicine. Beyond that, I can't think of any other skills I'd have that would be of use to you." "Noted. Well, that is all ensign. I suggest you go see ensign Andersen, your director superior. While we were talking, I have activated your rank and department access. If you have any question, or need anything, you know where my.....office is." Skyfire nodded and checked his padd before grabbing his gear, heading straight to sickbay to consult with Anderson. In a perfect about-face, he left the FO's quarters. (reply none) (posted by Nick and Kat) ----- (Starfire, Bridge, Zyahn, Day 1, 1440) As the ship was twenty minutes away from departing, Ayehla headed to the bridge to resume her duties there. She saluted each of the officer on the bridge who turned her way. In front of her was her new crewmates. The people with whom she will be spending most of her time for the next few months....years.....who knew. She examined each one working for a few seconds. She then headed to her console....the tactical console. Entering her command code, she verified everything on that console was operational. Then, she checked the latest reports. As she anticipated, ensign Signos tactical report was there. Everything was ready. The medical team was also ready. She had a conversation with the new ensign, Chythar Skyfire less than an hour ago and he seemed ready for his first assignment. There was only one department she hadn't received confirmation. "Lieutenant Ayehla to Lieutenant Corey, is our warp engines ready for their first voyage?" (Reply Corey) (Posted by Nick) ----- (Starfire, Engineering, Corey, Day 1, 1447) "Monitor the antideuterium intake." he ordered to one of his Engineers. "Ready the main magnetic field and raise it around the core." "Chief, is that really necessary?" one of the Engineers asked. "I want to be sure." he said, turning about to an assistant "What is the current output?" "4426 teradynes" "That's not the highest we can go, but it will do. Slowly feed the power through the relays and warm up the nacelles." The computer beeped two times with a yellow light flashing each. "I said slowly, we don't want to overload every EPS conduit from here to the rest of the ship." =/\= Lieutenant Ayehla to Lieutenant Corey, is our warp engines ready for their first voyage? =/\= He pressed the combadge. "Ready as she's ever gonna be, ma'am." The warp engines were ready. The only thing they had to do further, was to realign the warp field perfectly, and they could only do that while at warp. (Reply: Zyahn iyw) (Posted by: Lani) ----- (Starfire, Bridge, S'yes, Day 1, 1500) The time had come at last! All launching activities have been completed. The first Officer, Zyahn was sitting at tactical as there was no specific FO chair as in the larger starships . S'yes looked to the FO who nodded in the affirmative to proceed. Captain Sanok was in his ready room working in mission details. S'yes informed him they were ready and he needed orders. Sanok sent a terse =^=proceed Lieutrnant=^=. S'yes radioed departure control for permission. They were cleared in short order. S'yes ordered the helmsman to depart as indicated by departure control. The young ensign acknowledged the order and they were off. The Starfire was soon outside the confines Of SB 989 and cleared for warp speed. S'yes, who had spoken earlier with the FO and CO ordered "125 mark 53 warp 2". The sturdy ship leapt into warp speed on get maiden voyage. (Reply: none) (Posted by: Bill West) ----- (Starfire, Bridge, S'yes, Day 1, 1505) S'yes was still sitting in the CO's seat. He made a note to not get real used to it as it wasn't likely his anytime soon. He was making sure the sturdy craft was operating at peak efficiency. Wane Corey was proving to be quite a character - S'yes had heard through the grapevine that he had tried ro make an afvance on Tesha.S'yes never did understand his friends and their social practices. The Caitian 2O didn't quite know what to think of the FO and CO. He had supposed he'd get occasional center seat time and go on AWAY missions. S'yes was surprised that he had gotten to pilot the ship on her maiden voyage. He was also surprised at the lack of commissioning ceremonies. He had learned they were common from his study of naval history. Captain Sanok was turning into an intriguing puzzle. Caitians loved solving puzzles! He shrugged mentally and figured he'd learn what was about to unfold when it was time. (Reply: None) (Posted by: Bill West) ----- (Starfire, Bridge, S'yes, Day 1, 1600) The captain had not yet stepped on to the bridge. This was odd to the Caitian 2O way of thinking. Part of him liked being trusted to take a ship out on his own. But there was another part that troubled him somewhat. Why would a CO miss taking out a ship on her first mission? He shrugged and concentrated on his duty. All the departments were reporting in with nothing other than minor glitches. S'yes hoped nothing would happen till they worked all the problems out. His Caitian curiosity was working full time. He was wondering what they'd been assigned for a first mission. He hoped they would soon be key in on the work ahead. (Reply: None) (Posted by: Bill W.) ----- (Starfire, Ready Room, Sanok & Signos, Day 2, 2013) Jessica was called to the captain's office. Wasting no time, she made her way through the ship. She knew that she would be called; it was only a matter of time before the captain would be tying up loose ends from the last mission. Standing before the door, she pressed the button that would announce her. Jessica waited. She straightened her uniform and placed an unruly piece of black hair that had fallen over her left eye, behind her ear. It wasn't long before the door opened and she was allowed entry. Entering the ready room, she announced herself as was customary. "Ensign Signos reporting as ordered." "Please sit, Ensign," said Sanok. He was a man that always got directly to the point, so as soon as Signos was seated, he started with why he had summoned her. "Because things have been so busy for us, I have not had the opportunity to speak with you. In your official report about the battle between the Rose and the Romulan ship, there is something that is not in the report. I think we both know what that is. Please clarify that for me, Ensign." Jessica nodded, taking a deep breath before she spoke. "Captain, you know my past and I know you would prefer if that part of myself was not a part of this ship and her crew, but the simple fact is, that she is." She made the comment referring to Lily. "In our training by Section 31, Lily was trained, as were all Section 31 assassins, to defeat enemy ships by attacking the areas of the ship where the enemy vessels were structurally weak. We learned this by reviewing captured ship schematics. Since this is a Section 31 tactic, and not normally used by Federation ships, it seemed prudent to leave that knowledge out of the official report. Unless you want to broadcast that there is a Section 31 operative on the ship." Jessica knew the captain was about to speak up, condemning her use of Section 31 tactics, but she continued. "What would of happened if I had not acted thus? Everyone on that shuttle would be dead now. I used what skills I have to save lives." This was not the first time she had been brought into the captain's office for using questionable tactics in battle, but every time, she had made sure it was the best route to save the lives of her ship mates. "Ensign, you do not need to be so defensive," said Sanok. "Your reasoning was sound. Though there are Starfleet policies and procedures, there are times when it is necessary to do something else. It was clear that the Romulans were intending to destroy us, so you did what you had to do. It is most regrettable that so many died, but you helped save our people." In a confrontation like the one with the warbird, it was Starfleet policy to disable rather than destroy, if possible. Sanok had submitted in his report that destroying the Romulan vessel had been necessary, so leaving out anything alluding to Section 31 was wise. He was satisfied that the matter was concluded. "There is something else I would like to discuss," said Sanok. "I spoke with Mister C'Nell and one of the things I had to ask, was about your relationship. I do not wish to pry in your personal affairs, but I'm sure you understand my concerns." Sanok had been speaking to Signos in a relaxed tone. In their past discussions, she tended to come dangerously close to outright insubordination. He expected her to be that way again, but perhaps a relaxed approach would prevent her from doing so. However, his tone became more serious as he proceeded. "C'Nell told me the two of you mind-melded." "Yes," came the simple answer. Jessica was not wanting to bring up Thomas in this conversation; he was her private life, and the only person she had allowed to get close. She mind-melded with him so he could know the truth of her past and the blood that was on her hands. Sanok had not expected such a short answer. Signos often engaged in self-pity when speaking with him, but this time, she was different. She seemed subdued. "Ensign, I do not need to remind you that the truth of your past was classified. None of us that know it are to speak of it to anyone else. You were in violation of that when you mind-melded. You knew you were not to let C'Nell know. It is clear that you care for him, but now, you have placed his life in grave danger. You more than anyone else on this ship, know what S31 people are capable of doing, and that they are willing to sacrifice anyone if it served their purpose. I am disappointed in you." Jessica chose her words carefully before she spoke, her voice soft, with almost a musical quality to it. Her mood softened, that while Sanok was disappointed with her, this was the most human he had ever talked to her. "I understand my actions and I stand by them. You may be disappointed with me, and I can understand your reasons why, but I have had far more time to think about this. Thomas placed his life in danger when he chose to stand by my side. I allowed him to understand the danger he was placing himself in. If something did happen, he could be better prepared and more able to handle the situation." She looked away from the captain, suddenly feeling more what she appeared in her youthful state. She knew this conversation had to take place, but baring one's personal life before another that had threatened to have you tossed from the ship, was a difficult position to be in. Before she had nothing to lose. After Eian, she was alone and cared little what happened. If she lived or died, it just didn't matter, but things had changed. She had met Thomas and now had someone who cared to understand her, Lily, and her past. "I knew you would not approve of my discussion in this matter, and we would never see eye-to-eye on it." She brought her gaze to meet the eyes of the captain. "But I had to be true to what I felt in my heart." Again, Sanok did not expect this from Signos. In the past, when he had confronted her on S31 matters, she had always been belligerent. Something was happening that was changing her. Could a sincere relationship with C'Nell be a stability Signos desperately needed in her life? Was there a side of her he had never seen or expected, begun to come out? Uncertain how to proceed, Sanok remained in captain mode. "Ensign Signos, I have not hidden my position towards having you on the Rose, and now on the Starfire. I have never completely trusted you. You are here only because of a promise I made to Captain Salid. If you are to have my trust and my respect, you must earn it and prove yourself to me. I once lived with my emotions, so I can understand why you did the meld, but you still should not have done it. You have gained something in your personal relationship, but you have also lost ground with me in the arena of trust." Jessica sighed heavily. "I am sorry you feel that way, but let's face it. In light of all that I have done for the Rose and what I will be capable of doing with the Starfire, you place little, if any faith or trust in me. You will not cry if I fall, despite all I have accomplished. Look back over my record since I came to the Rose. Look at how many times I have cheated death to save the lives of others. Remember who killed Volus and helped you rescue the parents of a dear friend, and who created the device to free them from the collective." She looked around, her voice calm and soft. Finally, she was able to build a bridge, an understanding that could lead to trust. "I say this not to anger you, so please don't think that. I mention this because, if you only look at the negative a person has done, that's all you will see. I was told once that careless realism cost souls. It might be something to think about. The simple fact is, there is no understanding between us, and without understanding, there can be no trust, and in that, nothing for me to lose." Many things were racing through Sanok's mind, though most prevalent was Signos referring to Ben Soma. Though Sanok's feelings for his friend were buried very deeply within him, a simple reference to him, brought back just how much Sanok missed him. There was a silence in the room that seemed to have physical form. Sanok had never experienced anything like it. It was as if an ethereal creature was wrapping itself around him in a blanket of heaviness. He had to shake himself mentally to snap out of it. Sanok had every expectation that this meeting with Signos was going to be like all the others, where he chastised her for something, and she spoke to him with disrespect. That had not happened. He was beginning to understand why, but he would need to take more time to think about it. He broke the silence. "As we move forward, Ensign, please be mindful of keeping secret what must be secret. Greater things than we are at stake." The next words out of Sanok's mouth, was something he never thought he would say. "You can come to me any time. You really can trust me." "And you, me," Jessica responded. Sensing the meeting was nearing an end, she stood and made her way to the door, stopping just before the opening of the door. "Sir, may I say something as a personal observation?" Most of the conversations Sanok had with Signos were highly personal, so it was once again something unexpected to hear her ask before speaking. Sanok motioned with his hand for her to go ahead and say it. "Your time as captain has made a great impact on you, and I'm glad for the change." Jessica smiled toward the captain, as a wild strand of hair slid before her eyes. The door opened and she made her exit. The ready room door closed, leaving Sanok alone to ponder everything that had just taken place. (reply none) (posted by Bob & Matt)
